The world-renowned SUBARU BOXER® engine

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is available with the choice of two direct-injection SUBARU BOXER® engines. The naturally aspirated 2.0L 4-cylinder is offered on the Convenience, Touring and Sport trim levels while the Limited and Outdoor trim levels offer the option of the naturally aspirated 2.5L 4-cylinder. Both engines feature Dual Active Valve Control, direct-injection and a great thermal management system. Coupled that with the latest weight-saving measures and advanced technologies, they combine to boost efficiency, reduce emissions, improve acceleration and heighten driver engagement. All models fitted with the Lineartronic CVT include the SI-DRIVE® engine management system with its eco-friendly Intelligent (I) mode and more responsive Sports (S) mode.

The Crosstrek is available with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), each designed to work with different versions of the legendary Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system. These combinations create stellar fuel efficiency and optimum response to the complete range of driving conditions, from dicing with big city traffic to escaping along the nearest open road.

6-speed Manual Transmission (6MT)

This transmission is linked to a viscous-coupling limited-slip centre differential that provides near neutral handling and maximum control. Crisp, intuitive and direct, the 6-speed manual is tailor-made for those seeking sporty satisfaction behind the wheel. The transmission also includes Hill Start Assist, which helps prevent rolling backward when starting on inclines.

Lineartronic® CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission)

This technologically advanced transmission incorporates a wide range of gear ratios, Auto Stepped Speed Control (which mimics how a traditional automatic shifts) and lightweight materials. These features combine to create superior response, driveability, quietness and fuel efficiency. The CVT is linked to a multi-plate transfer clutch AWD system that offers predictable handling and shifts torque to the rear wheels under hard acceleration or in low-traction conditions. All versions of the CVT come equipped with Hill Start Assist; some trim levels also feature paddle shifters and an 8-speed manual mode.

X-Mode®

Most versions of the 2022 Crosstrek equipped with the CVT feature standard X-MODE®, which makes it easier to tackle big adventures. With the push of a button, the system assumes control of the engine, transmission, AWD system, brakes and other critical components to help the driver navigate the trickiest driving conditions and the steepest of inclines with greater confidence and increased safety. The Outdoor trim level comes equipped with dual-function X-MODE®, which lets the driver select either the snow/dirt setting or a deep snow/mud setting to better deal with the conditions.

The Subaru Global Platform is a proprietary design that absorbs approximately 40% more crash energy than the previous generation vehicle platform. The design utilizes high-tensile material throughout, a strengthened structure at the sides and back, and reinforced joints to help create an incredibly robust and uniform safety cell. This ultra-strong platform also reduces twisting forces on the frame and slashes vibration and resonance throughout the body, steering, floor and seats. Together with a low centre of gravity overall and the fully independent suspension system, the Subaru Global Platform also creates a highly responsive and precise driving experience with improved straight-line stability.

This double-wishbone rear suspension system utilizes a stabilizer bar to create a smooth ride and a truly stable feeling, especially in the corners. The system is engineered to reduce noise and vibration, while increasing control and stability. The rear stabilizer bar is mounted to the body instead of through rubber bushings, which helps keep body roll to a minimum and creates an even more composed driving experience.
